Columbia University was founded in 1754 under the name King’s College. Thirty years later it was renamed Columbia College, and became Columbia University in 1896. It is officially known as Columbia University in New York City, but it is more commonly referred to simply as Columbia. It is a private, non-sectarian institution.

Columbia has over six thousand courses covering medicine, law, journalism, dentistry, engineering, teaching, architecture and business, as well as the sciences and humanities. There are over a hundred research centers and institutes.
