The University of Tokyo (東京大学) in Tokyo, Japan, has the acronym of TODAI (東大). It hosts about 30,000 students, who earn credits in classes that include medicine, law, engineering, science, letters, economics, agriculture, education and arts & sciences. The University of Tokyo was established in 1877. The Meiji government chartered the school by amalgamating several smaller schools. After World War II, it would swallow a former First Higher School and Tokyo Higher School. Some of the departments, like astronomy, were actually rooted in schooling done before the official founding of the university.
